Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a medium-sized forest tree native to North America. The inner bark contains a starchy carbohydrate substance called mucilage. When it’s mixed with water it swells and forms a slippery gel. Mucilage is used as a soothing demulcent. Demulcents offer soothing support for mucous membranes. It is traditionally used to help soothe the throat and support healthy digestion.
