Taurine Taurine has several functions and health benefits. Taurine is a simple sulphur-containing compound and is one of the most abundant amino acids in the body. It plays a variety of roles in the functioning of the brain, heart, gallbladder, eyes and vascular system. One of its basic functions is to facilitate the passage of sodium, potassium and magnesium ions into and out of cells and to electrically stabilise the cell membranes. Because taurine plays such an important role in muscle maintenance, it is thought that taurine supplementation may be beneficial to body builders. Taurine is also important to the body’s metabolism of fats. It is a key component of bile, and is needed to help absorb fat-soluble vitamins and regulate serum cholesterol levels. One study showed that a taurine deficiency leads to a decrease in nitric oxide production, which in turn causes a decrease in blood (and oxygen) flow to the muscles.
